The IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager 4.2.3 Workshop, as well as other courses, is designed to be easily delivered in stages at a customer site. Its modular structure let the training be more adjusted to the particular needs of the ITCM Administrators within an organization. Some people will implement, some will only package in the Windows environment, while others will deploy. Finally, a group will usually specialize only in Pristine Installations. Moreover, the Senior Deployment Administrator needs to take the whole five days if starting from scratch. If the software is already implemented then the first day can be entirely waived. This way of delivering the workshop can save valuable time. The customer attends only the days which are relevant to his job.

Course Map

The IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager Workshop is designed to be slit in specific days if necessary:

Day 1 – Overview, Implementation and Scanning Day
Day 2 – SoftwarePackage Day
Day 3 – Deployment Day
Day 4 – Advanced Deployment Day
Day 5 – Pristine Installations Day

Day 1 and Day 5 are completely independent days and can be waived. Day 4 depends on Day 3 and Day 2. Day 3 depends on Day 2.

Possible scenarios for course attendance

Here is a typical scenario for a corporation with 2,000 workstations. The following IT personnel should attend at least the following days of the course:

Number of persons Title Responsible for: Should attend at least:
4 Framework/Inventory Administrators Implementation of IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager itself Day 1
12 Packaging Administrators Packaging of software to be installed on End-users desktops Day 2

Three distinct images

To support the above scenarios, three distinct images are used to cover different stages of the course. They are:

  1. The "S" (Start) image is meant to be used for day one of the public five day course. It is also used for the Infrastructure 4.1 course
  2. The "I" (ITCM 4.2 Installed) image meaning that this is the start of day 2. It means that all ITCM components have been installed, the scans have not been performed and the Software Packages have not been created. This is for customer that are already using ITCM and that do not want to train their people on the installation per say.
  3. The "P" (Pre-staged) image meaning that all components have been installed and configured, all and pristine installations images packages have been created and that the Tivoli Server is ready to perform pristine installations. this setup is used by the instructor.
